Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) who performed under the name Aaliyah, was an
American recording artist, actress and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight other people were killed in an airplane crash in the Bahamas. They had traveled to the Bahamas to film the music video for "Rock the Boat". Luis Morales III was the pilot controlling the plane, it was later found that he was unlicensed at the time of the accident and had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Upon discovery Aaliyah's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Blackhawk International Airways, which was settled out of court. Since the tragic death of the "Princess of R&B" her music has gained commercial success with several posthumous releases. Her albums continued to sell millions and estimations are between 24 to 32 million copies sold worldwide.
